General Business Liability Insurance

As a small business owner, Business Owner’s Policy, or BOP, protects you from liability claims from lawsuits and safeguards your property, equipment, and inventory. It also can cover you financially if your business unexpectedly shuts down from a covered loss.

What Does General Liability Cover?

Unlike commercial property coverage, general liability only provides coverage for damage and injuries your business causes to a third party. It does not cover damage to your business’ own property or injuries to your employees.

It can help pay for medical care, repairing or replacing damaged property and legal fees for covered claims.

This type of business liability insurance covers claims alleging:

Bodily injury caused by your business operations. This includes paying your customers’ medical expenses if they’re injured on your property. If a customer sues you as a result of a bodily injury, general liability can help cover your defense costs.

Property damage caused by an employee damaging a client’s possessions, outdoor signs falling on cars, accidental damage to customer vehicles, etc.

Advertising injury can come from places like copyright violations, business ads, or libel claims that damages your reputation.

General Liability vs. BOP

It’s important to understand the difference between a general commercial liability policy and your BOP coverage. General liability usually bundle coverages according to your specific needs. BOP policies always bundle the same three general business coverages, giving you more comprehensive coverage on average "out of the box".
