Prescription Drug Plans

Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, also called Part D Plans, is an optional drug coverage benefit offered to everyone who is eliglble for and has Medicare. The most common type of plan that is provided is called a PDP plan, which adds drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans, and Medicare Medical Savings Account (MSA) Plans.

Each Medicare drug plan must give at least a standard level of coverage set by Medicare. Plans can vary the list of prescription drugs they cover (called a formulary) and how they place drugs into different “tiers” on their formularies.

Considerations for Prescription Drug Plans

  • Depending on the drugs and medications you take, whether they are all name brand or have a number of generic drugs, can affect the value based on your regular intake.
  • You may want extra protection from rising costs of prescritpion drugs.
  • Peace of mind in the event you will need to begin taking any number of drugs, especially those that might end up requiring substantial costs.
  • You might like the extra benefits and lower costs available by getting my health care and prescription drug coverage from one plan, and I’m willing to accept the plan’s restrictions on what doctors, hospitals, and other health care providers I can use.

We’re here to help you make the best decisions on whether or not a Part D plan is right for you. We can walk you through the costs, pros and cons, and help you weigh the best options.
